Function
The Technical Project Engineer (Electrical) will be responsible to lead the capture and manage the execution of engineering enabled client projects of varying sizes and complexities across the array of industry sectors which the client operates, while leveraging the organizational resources and business processes to present a best-value solution to our clients. In doing so, the incumbent assumes accountability for financial and operational performance (i.e., HSE, quality, schedule, and financial) of all projects under their management, reporting performance against agreed KPIs, while defining action plans to address any deficits.
As a practicing electrical engineering, the incumbent will be required to perform detailed design and engineering on various projects, in particular related to electrical power systems and automated controls. As a registered professional engineer, the incumbent will assume responsibility for client engineering permits to practice, by filling the role of Member-in-Responsible Charge or equivalent.
Given the concentrated focus on the client on the power and controls sectors, the Technical Project Engineer (Electrical) will be challenged with identifying and exploring new technology and product application so as ensure the client remains competitive in field of electrification.
Direction Exercised and Authority
As a Technical Project Engineer, the incumbent will be expected to manage the delivery of all assigned project scopes while adhering to the client’s business policies and procedures, including the Decision and Financial Approval Authority Matrix. Licensed as a Professional Engineer, the incumbent will be the nominated within the organization for responsibility of Member in Responsible Charge, or equivalent, for the approval to practice of electrical engineering as may be granted by the applicable governing bodies.
Duties and Responsibilities
Shall include, but may not be limited to, those listed below. In performing this role, the incumbent shall adhere to the clients operating practices and organizational values.
HSE Management – Actively participate in building a positive safety culture where people well-being comes first, HSE risk is understood, and we always strive to improve. This includes ensuring all work is safety planned and executed, where HSE risks are identified and managed.

- Actively seek to understand the broader suite of technical capability that the client and its operating affiliates can provide to the marketplace, working across organizational boundaries to share knowledge that achieve the organizational goal of “Providing Unmatched Technical Serves and Solutions within Atlantic Canada.”
- Mentoring – Mentor and develop junior engineers in their chosen field, providing professional guidance as needed for them to excel in the chosen field.
Technical Project Delivery
- Cradle-to-grave responsibility for delivery of customer projects, including engineering, procurement, installation, and commissioning.
- Review client requirements, meeting with them to define the scope of the requirement, translating into an engineered solution that can delivered by the company. As needed, engage suppliers, and in-house technical personnel, conclude upon the solution to be provided to the client.
- Prepare a technical and commercial proposal for client requested projects or services. This may include producing conceptual designs and/or reviewing client specifications for the purposes of preparing cost estimates and execution plans.
- Prepare cost estimates for client proposals, translating into control budgets if the company is successful in the pursuit.
- Ensure all projects are executed respecting all HSE obligations, while striving to ensure cost, schedule and quality objectives are achieved. Prepare timely, regular status reports.
- Take accountability for financial and operational performance of all assigned projects. Report and manage operational performance against agreed KPIs including HSE targets, quality expectations, and financial metrics for each job (e.g., job margins). Address performance gaps accordingly.
- Provide monthly reports to client base for ongoing contracts if appropriate and generally in the design, pre-implementation stage.
- Develop and issue project completion documentation if and as required by client.
Engineering and Design
- Providing subject matter knowledge in the discipline of electrical engineering. Respond to technical queries coming from site teams to provide necessary guidance to allow the project to safety continue.
- Engineering Standards – Assist with the development, maintenance, and implementation of engineering standards for technical drawings, equipment, installation practices and workmanship.
- Design Assurance – Oversee, review, verify the technical work performed by other engineers, technicians, and designers.
- System Design – Work with technician and engineers to complete detail design for equipment and systems, and review designs presented by suppliers and 3rd party engineering firms.
- Knowledge Management – Keep abreast of all technical, legal, contractual, and legislative advances and changes in the practice of engineering which may impact the company.
- Technical Studies – Complete various power systems technical studies using ETAP software.
- Testing Results – Provide guidance and interpretation of equipment testing results in accordance with industry standards (e.g., IEEE, CSA, etc.)
Identification and Application of New Technology
- Pursuant to the companies’ strategic roadmap, actively explore new technology and products that provide opportunity for the company to remain competitive in the areas of electrification and power systems.
- Assess the market potential, using to help develop a business case for entry.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and registered as a Professional Engineer with PEG-NL.
- Relevant Work Experience, Competencies and Attributes
- 5+ years’ experience working as an electrical engineer, with a focus on power systems.
- Past experience performing material take-offs, estimating, and preparing execution plans on a variety of electrical projects.
- Strong background in electrical system design, with the ability to complete technical calculations and analysis, and produce detailed designs, drawings, and specifications.
- Ability to work within AutoCAD and other 3D modelling software.
- Proficient in the use of ETAP software and completion of power systems studies.
- High levels of professionalism when dealing with clients, subcontractors, and all internal stakeholders.
- Familiarity with a shop environment, assisting and guiding technicians on engineering design.
- A high commitment to safety and quality.
- Package management experience, including supplier management to meet all specifications and contractual requirements.
- Demonstrated entrepreneurial spirit and desire to seek out new business opportunities needed to sustain the organization’s growth.
- Ability to collaborate with clients and client’s engineers to develop best-for-client solutions.
- Good communication skills, with a strong ability to effectively communicate on complex technical problems for understanding by team members and clients.
- Proficient ability to write technical reports.
- Ability to manage technical interfaces (both soft and hard).
- Ability to accept significant responsibility, while working under varying degrees of direction.
- Self-starter who identifies priority tasks and puts plans in place for completeness and delivery.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively interact with a variety of personnel.
- Proven skills in effectively managing multiple tasks, often under pressure and within time constraints.
- Willingness to accept and action critical feedback from clients and potential customers, using as a basis to improve oneself and the organization.
