Test and Trials Specialist, Electrical – Halifax & Dartmouth, NS

Dovre Group is pleased to present the following opportunity: Test and Trials Specialist, Electrical located in Halifax, NS.

Function

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work as part of the Test & Trials team to commission systems and equipment, for both equipment and systems directly in assigned Area of Responsibility and for electrical equipment supporting other Trials Specialists
  • Demonstrate compliance with Classification Society and Customer requirements
  • Execute high hazard commissioning activities in accordance with shipyard standards and procedures
  • Enforce safety and operational procedures to ensure safe operation of equipment and systems
  • Enforce trials team compliance to HSE objectives and procedures
  • Work with Lock-out/Tag-out coordinator to ensure compliance with LOTO procedure
  • Develop Set to Work/Testing/Trials procedures/agenda
  • Work closely with Production, Supply Chain, Engineering and Quality Control staff to ensure efficient handover of systems and equipment
  • Ensure commissioning and trials activities achieve first time right quality standards; reinforces the “zero defect” expectations and culture within the trials organization
  • Lead troubleshooting efforts to resolve issues found during commissioning by applying engineering 1st principals, experience and relationships, both internal and external to the company
  • Developing and managing detailed test & trial schedules for assigned area of responsibility
  • Execute safe initial energization of equipment and systems
  • Operation of ship systems and safe execution of test procedures and trial agendas, both ashore and at sea
  • Coordinate setting of conditions necessary to support third-party / Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) conduction of trials, and provide liaison support for their trials
  • Lead trade resources in support of system commissioning and operation
  • Present and conduct trials in the presence of customer and classification society
  • Report Test and Trial agenda results to demonstrate that requirements have been met
  • Execute preventative maintenance on equipment within assigned area of responsibility
  • Expected to be at sea during contractor’s sea trials for periods up to 14 days
  • Expected to work various shifts and change shift on short notice as required to meet commissioning schedule (this occurs infrequently < twice per year)
  • Expected to work at both Halifax Shipyard and in Dartmouth to provide commissioning support to the various programs within the company

Requirements

Qualifications:

Education Required (one of the following):

  • Bachelor’s Degree in relevant discipline (P.Eng or equivalent)
  • Technical diploma at the technologist (Electrical, Instrumentation)
  • Red Seal Electrical or Instrument Technician certification
  • Transport Canada certification as a Marine Engineer
  • RCN or other NATO navy certification as a Marine Engineer or equivalent

Experience Required:

  • Minimum 2+ years in one or more of the following:
  • Seagoing Naval engineering experience
  • Commissioning of new build vessels in a commercial shipyard
  • Commissioning of high-tech systems in process or power plants
  • Design of state-of-the-art new build ships or marine structures
  • Experience in the design and/or operation of diesel electric propulsion systems would also be an asset
  • Strong knowledge of electrical systems and equipment, including propulsion systems, power generation and control, power distribution, motor controls, automation and control systems in a marine/naval setting or equivalent industrial environment
  • Strong communication skills in English, both verbal and written
  • Willingness to work long/flexible hours
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word and Excel)
