Transformer units successfully lifted from a single point at the Suvic’s Kalanti BESS site
A significant milestone was reached in the Kalanti 50 MW / 100 MWh battery energy storage project when all 11 transformer units were lifted into place in a single day on August 21, 2025. The lifts were carried out exceptionally efficiently thanks to thorough pre-planning: a crane location was arranged in the middle of the site, enabling all units to be installed from one point.
The transformer units (MVS Units), each with rated power of 5140 kVA and weighing around 17 tons, were installed on concrete foundations. The equipment, supplied by the client were transported to the site by truck trailers. The transformer units are the size of 20-foot containers – in fact, they are built into a shipping container frame. The lifts were executed by Länsinostot using a 200-ton crane.
Cabling had also been pre-laid in conduits beneath the transformers, which accelerated the installation phase.
“As the saying goes, well planned is half done. Thanks to excellent pre-planning, we were able to manage the logistics of the transformer deliveries as well as all lifting operations efficiently and safely within the same day,” says Electrical Project Engineer Mikael Mäkelä.
The next major milestone in the project will be the delivery of 22 battery containers, scheduled for December 2025.
